So I took the leap and started my own site. I’ve been playing games as long as I can remember, and always enjoyed thinking about what makes them tick. More recently, I’ve been writing about games, mostly game reviews. It’s led me to meet and talk with some cool people, and exercising the critical eye has made me realize there’s a lot more I want to write about. So what exactly do I plan to do here? Well, I’m glad you asked.
Musings
Really I started this because I want to explore how and why the games I play affect me the ways they do. Expect some dives into game design concepts as well as games themselves. My perspective is primarily that of a consumer of games. I’m not a game designer, nor do I have an archivist’s knowledge of every facet of gaming history. But I think most of us fall into this bin, and I’ve seen enough to feel like I have a thing or two to say. I’ll try to mix it up with both quick hits and longer features from time to time. I aim to keep the takes fresh and not too hot.
Quick Hits
Sometimes something catches my eye, but there’s not a lot to say about it. Maybe it’s on the horizon or in early access. Maybe there’s just that one thing that jumped out at me. In either case, we’ll take a quick peek, see what all the fuss is about, and be on our way.
Game Reviews
I don’t anticipate that this will be my primary focus, as I also write reviews for Nook Gaming, but occasionally something about a game strikes and and makes me want to take a critical look. I aim to provide a spoiler-free experience that explores my impressions of the game and what drives them so you can decide if you think the game might be worth your time. After all, you might like something I don’t, and I try to give you the kind of information that can help you figure that out. Learn more about my approach to reviews here.
Visual Novel Content
I’ve always enjoyed games that can deliver an interesting narrative experience. Unsurprisingly, I’m a fan of visual novels and play a good number of them. It’s a bit of a niche interest in gaming, and the experience can be quite different compared to more traditional games. But I think there’s a lot of interesting stuff to talk about, and I expect I’ll be regularly featuring content about visual novels.
…And More?
One of the only safe predictions you can make about starting a new project is that it will probably not go exactly how you expect. So who knows, maybe in a couple years this will be all about midwestern soybean farming. Well ok, that won’t happen, but you get the idea.
I’ll also hopefully be improving the visual design of my site over time. Things are a bit white at the moment. Admittedly, it’s not my strong suit, so I’ll probably keep it minimalistic. Better than ending up with a neon GeoCities-esque hellscape. But it’s something I plan to work on.
I hope you’ll join me on my journey and maybe find something of value in my words. And either way, I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Just remember to respect each other and always play fair.
Good luck marra!
